Ikon Loco Works SHAY No 3
The Shay No 3 loco was built by Dave Giles, Ikon Engineering Developments in Auckland New Zealand in 2010. It is 1/3 full size of the original. It is number three out of a batch of five similar Shay locos built by Ikon Engineering Developments. This type of loco has a reduction gear drive to all 8 driving wheels which gives high tractive effort to operate on steep grades. Tractive weight 750 Kg – Shay No 3 can haul a train weight of several ton at speeds of 6 to 12 Km per hour on good quality track.
STEAM BOILER DETAIL 43 Litre capacity 100 PSI Max working pressure.
The certified steel boiler has many heavy gauge copper tubes from the firebox at the rear allowing the fire to pass through the tubes heating the water and exhausting out through the chimney at the front of the boiler.
BOILER WATER FEED SYSTEM
This loco has 5 ways of taking water from the 60-litre stainless steel water tank under the driver’s seat replacing the water used up as the steam is produced pushing the 3 pistons powering the locomotive along. Two steam operated injectors, a steam powered water pump, an axle powered water pump and a hand operated water pump.
BRAKING SYSTEM
A steam powered air compressor is fitted to supply Compressed air so the Driver can operate the locomotive air brakes when needed. A Parking brake lever is also situated in the drivers cab to prevent the loco moving when unattended.
